To honor the significance of International Women’s Day on March 8, our students visited the donors residing at our Yakacık Residence. Guided by their teachers, middle and high school students spent the day bridging the generational gap through shared stories and heartfelt connections.
Throughout the visit, students had the opportunity to converse with women donors who have contributed to society through years of labor, sacrifice, and steadfast support. The exchange of memories and sincere smiles created an atmosphere of deep emotional resonance.
Retired financial advisor Birsen Ulufer expressed her joy in celebrating this special day with Darüşşafaka students:
“You are raising children who are conscious, determined, and clear about their future paths. Unfortunately, women are often forced to choose professions based on societal gender perceptions. However, women must be present in every field. I want to see more women in science, technology, and in positions of leadership and representation. Seeing the youth of Darüşşafaka strengthens my belief in this future. I am reminded of Atatürk’s words to the students he sent abroad: ‘I am sending you as sparks; you must return as torches.’ These students reinforce that conviction; each will become a torch illuminating their surroundings and their country.”
Prof. Dr. Fatma Özden Ekmekçi, another resident of the Yakacık Residence, highlighted the importance of these cross-generational meetings: “On the occasion of International Women’s Day, different generations of Türkiye came together today. We shared the past with them, and listening to their plans for the future filled us with hope.”
The students participating in the event also shared their reflections on this meaningful day. Safiye Elif O., a sixth-grader, expressed: “I am so happy to be here. Meeting the elders who donate to help develop our country makes me feel wonderful. Being with them on International Women’s Day is truly precious.”
Duru G., another sixth-grader, said: “It is a great privilege to be with our elders. Darüşşafaka is a school more beautiful than words can describe. Being at the residences today is even more exciting; they each take such a personal interest in us.”, underlining how special this gathering is for her.
Fatma Zehra A., another student joining this intergenerational bind-bonding event, said: “Listening to their stories brings me so much joy. The way they looked at us with pride was very moving. They gave us beautiful advice on how to develop our country further.”
As a tribute to the day, our female students presented the donors with mimosa flowers, a symbol of strength, resilience, and the herald of spring.
